June has just working with a church to help them establish a community garden for their congregation, so we paid a site visit today so that June could measure out the plot of land that they’ll be using right next to the church building. It is a predominantly African-American church and yesterday they were celebrating their 15th year anniversary. As we were measuring we could hear the gospel choir in full voice inside, and they sounded really good.

A favorite subject for many years now — the Frisch’s Big Boy statue. The retro feel of this particular shot has just the right feel to it.
It’s after 6 p.m. on the Friday starting a long weekend — and I’m still at my desk. What’s wrong with this picture? Clearly I should have paid heed to the exit sign above the door long before now. When yours is the last car left in the parking lot, you know you’ve overstayed your time. Pre-dinner cocktail on the back porch, here I come!
Back to “art in the everyday.” And I have to say that I’m really pleased how this turned out. It’s just a manhole cover in the street near the house, but the combination of the low angle, the warmth of the late afternoon sun and just the hint of a shaft of light on the right elevate it to something else. Sometimes I surprise even myself.
Rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat. Ah yes, there’s nothing like trying to concentrate at work (to say nothing of being on conference calls) while some guy outside your window uses a jack-hammer for several hours.
Footnote — the crew came back the next today to continue the work for a few more hours. Talk about putting your teeth on edge. The clear message from work today was — “The outside world is a dangerous place to be. You’d be better off just staying at your desk and working a bit longer.”
“Gardenitis Uncontrollus.” June definitely has a touch of this condition — and thanks goodness she does. If the gardening were left up to me, we wouldn’t have the verdant, blooming landscape we enjoy today. At best, I might have planted some snapdragons, because I like those. Maybe.
Time to get some flame-grilled goodness into these hamburgers! (Actually the BBQ didn’t look like this at all, I just came across a new app that puts flame effects on photos. Which is kinda interesting, but honestly how many subjects could you use this with? Apart from grilling hamburgers. So I thought if I’m going to give this effect a whirl, now’s the time to do it.
A very warm and humid day in Louisville today – an early taste of summer. So on days like today, lingering in the beer chiller of the local booze shop is not a bad thing to do!
The second graduation ceremony of the week — niece Sarah’s high school graduation in western Kentucky. The speeches during the event were interesting to say the least. One of the valedictorians decided to save his speech copy on a calculator “to be different.” The result that his speech was full of really long pauses as he had to wait every 30 seconds or so for the small screen on his calculator to refresh. (I can only presume that he didn’t test his approach first with a dry run before he reached the microphone on Friday night.) Another decided to deliver his speech off-the-cuff — which really only works if you are a great speaker. Anyway, once the formalities over with, the student body immediately erupted into celebrations by tossing caps in the air and letting fly with the silly string.
