Tonight, June and I drove to Lexington, KY to see Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band. It was a bit of gamble as we hadn’t really heard his music before, but you know it was Hugh Laurie, and someone I’ve been aware of for some time (before his role on “House”) so I thought we’d give it a whirl. And even Hugh acknowledged as much. He began the concert by saying “I know you’ve all taken a huge leap of faith to be here,” and that music is a relatively new outlet for him. But he put on a really, really good show! I don’t think anyone would have come away disappointed. He played mostly New Orleans blues (think St James Infirmary and Swanee River) but put his own stamp on these classics. And he certainly benefited from having a tight group of musicians with him. (As he said at the beginning of the show, “Listen to them. Look at me..but listen to them!”) He was funny thoughout and engaged with the audience. All in all, well worth the price of admission and the hour-plus drive to get to Lexington. The theater was really hot on people pulling out their cameras, but I got a couple of quick shots at the end of the show. Hugh is the one in the purple shirt.
